CPI(M) continues land grabbing movement despite arrests

Hyderabad, May 17 (UNI) The CPI(M) workers today continued their land-grabbing movement in Hyderabad City and the neighbouring Ranga Reddy District, demanding decent dwellings for the poor, despite large-scale arrests of party leaders and workers by the police.

In Hyderabad, party workers occupied government lands in Mahendra Hills, Ramantapur and Kutbullapur Municipalities and erected huts for the poor.

Police personnel, who were present in large numbers, removed the huts and arrested party workers who refused to disperse despite warnings.

Party leaders said they would not fear lathicharges and arrests and intensify the agitation. Police had deployed forces in large numbers in these areas.

In Khammam, 200 CPI workers were arrested when they surrounded the collectorate, demanding lands for the poor. Protesting against the arrests, party workers staged a dharna at the collectorate.
