Battle of Aberdeen commemorated in Andaman

Port Blair, May 17: Andaman and Nicobar Administration today commemorated the Battle of Aberdeen in an official function here today.

In the year 1859, the aboriginal tribe, known as the 'Great Andamanese' fought ''against oppressive and retaliatory policy of the British regime'', when they attacked the prison od Aberdeen here.

A memorial has been erected at the entrance of the Water Sports Complex in memory of the 'Great Andamanese' tribe killed during the battle.

To commemorate this day, a solemn function was organised here at the Andaman Water Sports Complex, where Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt Gen(Retd) Bhopinder Singh and other senior administration officers paid tributes at the Battle of Aberdeen Memorial.

The impact was so devastating that a 5,000-strong community of the Great Andamanese were reduced to less than 50. Today, their population is only 46.

Konmo and Gulab Devi, children of former Great Andamanmanese King Late Jirake were also present at the function who also offered floral tribute to their ancestors.
