WB: Unique process for recycling waste plastic

Kolkata, May 16: In a bid to spread mass awareness on waste management, Jadavpur University (JU) and Paschim Banga Vigyaan Mancha have jointly come up with a unique dry waste recycling process.

Speaking to newspersons here yesterday, Professor Sadhan Ghosh, Chairman of the Anti-littering Campaign Committee, said, ''Environmental research and ecological regeneration through Anti-littering and Green Recycling Process Plant of Waste Plastic (GRPPWP) project has been sanctioned by the Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal to the JU.'' The project would include door-to-door collection of dry waste, including plastic, metal and e-waste.

The Chairman added that the project would be inaugurated on the World Environment Day on June 5 and initiated in Ward nos 56, 57, 58 and 59 of Borrough no 7 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The professor informed, ''We have received support from Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, self-help groups and the State Urban Development Authority (SUDA).'' Elaborating on the GRPPWP project, Prof Ghosh said it would involve storing and segregation of waste in the Intermediate Storing and Segregation Station (IS3) and the processing and manufacture of different products out of waste plastic.

The project would cost about Rs 24,70,000 of which 50 per cent would be funded by the state government and the rest by the SUDA.
