ULFA rebels, police exchange fire

Guwahati, May 16 (UNI) Heavy exchange of fire took place between ULFA rebels and security personnel at Sivasagar district of upper Asom today.

Police said a patrolling police team, led by Subdivisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sonari, spotted two suspected ULFA rebels at Borhat, around 73 km from Sivasagar town.

When police asked the duo to stop, the rebels opened fire and started to flee.

Police retaliated, and several rounds were exchanged.

The rebels, however, managed to escape leaving their motorcycle behind.

No casualty was reported from either side.

Another motorcycle, used by ULFA rebels during yesterady's strike at Borhat in which a Hindi-speaking person was killed and his son injured, was also recovered by police from near the area.

Combing operation had been launched in the Borhat and adjoining areas bordering Dibrugarh district to track the militants.
