Sikkim celebrates State Day, CM challenges Opposition

Gangtok, May 16 (UNI) Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today castigated the opposition parties for acting as 'stumbling block' for the state's development by indulging in anti-democratic activities.

Speaking at the 33rd State day celebration here, Mr Chamling said Sikkim has carved a niche for itself in the country as a peaceful and progressive state in the last 12 years of his governance.

He said the Opposition was trying to negate the government's achievements by spreading false propaganda, misleading the people and hatching conspiracy against his government.

'' But I will not cow down before the Opposition's hullabuloo,'' Mr Chamling said and urged the people to have a positive attitude and help implement the policies and programmes of the government.

He asked the Opposition to come forward with programmes for the people instead of resorting to mudslinging against the ruling SDF party.

'' If you want to challenge me, then come forward with programmes for the people. But false propaganda will not affect me,'' Mr Chamling said.

Referring to the recent celebration by the Congress members over the reported admission of a disproportionate assets case at the Supreme Court, Mr Chamling said the case had not been admitted in the SC and termed it as a rumour spread by the Opposition.

He also cautioned the police to maintain peace in the state by checking such propagandas and reiterated his commitment of not letting his family members entering politics.

He also came down heavily on the bureaucrats and said action would be taken against the erring government employees.

The state government also felicitated nine local persons with cash awards for their contributions in different fields of architecture, journalism, social service, fine arts, sculpture, civil defence, literature and music.
