Qatar authorities release 34 Indian fishermen

New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) The Qatari authorities today released 34 Indian fishermen in detention in that country and Indian authorities here said they were secure, safe and in good health.

These fishermen are based in Saudi Arabia and were taken into custody after their boats trespassed into the waters of Qatar.

Most of the fishermen belong to Tamil Nadu.

The authorities said that efforts were underway to secure the release of the captains of the seven boats who continue to be in custody in Qatar.

An External Affairs Ministry release here said Indian Ambassador in Doha has personally visited them and stated that all the fishermen are in good health.

The Embassy in Doha has arranged for Indian food and other necessities and organised a visit by the representatives of Indian Community Benevolent Fund.

Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed lauded the efforts of embassies in Doha and Riyadh for securing the safe release of the fishermen.

The Minister has directed the Indian Embassies in the two cities to get in touch with the host governments, local authorities and the sponsors to enable the fishermen to resume their jobs.
