MP: Pvt medical colleges directed to charge fee

Jabalpur, May 16: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed 13 private dental and medical colleges to charge tuition fee, as prescribed by the Judges Committee, from students.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Anang Kumar Patnaik and Justice Sugandhi Lal Jain gave the direction on May 14 while hearing a petition filed by a student, Shobhit Sonkar, challenging charging of higher fee from students.

Petitioner's counsel Purushendra Kaurav told the court that on the direction of the High Court, the government had appointed a committee headed by Justice Gulab Gupta for arranging dental and medical college entrance examination and fixing fee.

He said the committee had fixed annual tuition fee at Rs 1.61 lakh for medical college and at Rs 1.10 lakh for dental colleges for 2007-08.

The petition stated that medical and dental colleges colleges are charging Rs 2.80 lakh and Rs 1.85 lakh respectively for the current academic session which was inappropriate.

The petitioner requested the court to direct the colleges to charge only prescribed fee.
