PM to open meet on education of SCs, STs and minorities tomorrow

New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate a two-day international conference on empowerment of weaker sections through education here tomorrow.

The function will be presided over by Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Leader of Opposition L K Advani will also make remarks on the subject.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterji, Deputy Chairperson of Rajya sabha K Rehman Khan, Planning Commission Vice Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia besides former prime minister I K Gujarl will be among a host of prominent figures, who will address the delegates at the valedictory function.

The meet titled 'Empowerment of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Minorities through Elementary Education' has been covened by Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal.

It is being organised in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Ministry.

The conference has been convened with a view to evolve a startegy and a consensus on the ways to promote education among weaker sections and minorities as one of the most importnat tool of empowering them, Mr Atwal said here.
