Mizoram varsity is expanding

Aizawl, May 16 (UNI) Mizoram University has taken initiative to open the 27 sanctioned post-graduate departments, official sources said here today.

From the new academic year, commencing on August 2007, most of these departments, including nine science departments were expected to be operational, the varsity's registrar Benjamin said.

The Science departments included Geology, Forestry, FEBES (Forest Ecology, Bio-diversity and Environmental Sciences), Geography, Zoology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology and Mathematics.

All these Departments have been provided substantial fund for procurement of equipments, teaching aids and books, said the registrar.

Three rounds of interview for recruitment of teachers (Professors, Readers and Lecturers) were conducted in the months of July and November 2006 and January 2007.

The university could fill up most of the UGC sanctioned positions barring a few reserved quota seats and professors' posts for which candidates were not available. As a result, the university would be able to fill up about 65 new teaching positions, official sources said here.

The University has received sanctions for opening school of management and school of technology and engineering from MHRD/UGC.

Necessary preparatory actions were being taken to start the MBA Course under the School of Management and Electronic Engineering, and Information Technology courses under the School of Technology and Engineering from this year onwards, the registrar said.

Mizoram University would now also be able to offer M Phil courses for a few subjects. Infrastructural development was also in full swing, the registrar added.

The University is engaging CPWD and NBCC as executing agencies.

By July 2007, the permanent administrative buildings, NRSC (computer centre), central library phase-I, transit academic building for eight departments are expected to be ready for occupation. By 2008-end, most of the construction works for quarters, guest house, academic buildings should take a final shape, he said.

The university would also be utilising hi-tech computerised facilities for their finance department and PUC has already been completed.

Computerisation of library and the examination department along with campus networking was also in progress, he informed.

The university is having now a full time director, college development council to interface with the 26 affiliated colleges.
