Lucknow, May 16: Top Indian carmaker Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) is in the process of a makeover from entry-level to higher-end segment.

''We are slowly positioning ourself in the middle to higher-end car segment, away from the familiar entry-level carmaker tag,'' MUL Chief General Manager (North) R S Kalsi told sources here.

He said the company was aiming for presence in more ''layers'' in the sector with its vehicles to cater to each category of car buyers.

Commenting on the recent high growth in the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment, Mr Kalsi said the company was bullish about it and would launch newer models like Vitara and Grand Vitara to address the growing needs and aspirations of the new-age car buyers.

He said MUL would leverage its wide presence in terms of sales and service network in the country to offer more high-end and luxury models.

Mr Kalsi was here recently to launch SX4 sedan from the MUL stable in Lucknow.

''We take regular feedback from our customers. This explains why Wagon R, which was said to be beefy was trimmed to suit customer preferences in its segment,'' he underlined.

Asked if MUL was also eyeing the export market for the newly-launched SX4, Mr Kalsi said the current objective was to consolidate the model in the domestic market first. ''Export of the model does not figure in our plans as of now.'' Talking of the UP car market, he claimed that MUL commanded a market share of 65 per cent in the state across segments.

''We are also taking the rural market more seriously and have several schemes up our sleeves to push the sales in the rural hinterland,'' he informed.
