J'khand HC asks district judges to file affidavit over jail's status

Ranchi, May 16 (UNI) Jharkhand High Court today directed all the district judges to file affidavits by July 7 regarding the compliance of earlier order about the present status of jails in the state.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Muthuswamy Karpagyavinayagam and Justice Narendra Tiwary passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation, filed by one Amit kumar, a former prisoner at Birsa Munda Central jail, Ranchi.

The petitioner pleaded that the prisoners had to face tough time as they did not get proper food, medicines and sufficient place to sleep as the jails were overcrowded.

The IG(prison), in his affidavit, informed the court that about 186 people facing life term sentence and in the jail for minimum 14 years were released after giving the remission under the provision of section 433 A Cr Pc between November, 2001 and May, 2007.

Earlier, the state government had informed the court that excluding Ranchi, all of the jails in Jharkhand were overcrowded The lawyer appearing on behalf of the state pleaded that about 12,000 prisoners were lodged in different jails of throughout the state.
