JK SHRC for relief to kin of youth tortured to death by forces

Srinagar, May 16 (UNI) The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in Jammu and Kashmir has asked the state government to a pay a relief of Rs one lakh to the family of a youth who was allegedly tortured to death by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in 2001.

In a petition, Abdul Salam Wani of Doda stated that BSF personnel stationed at Khudwani farm had handed over the body of his son Mohammad Yousuf Wani, who went missing, to Kulgam police station.

A single bench of Habibullah Bhat, quoting a report by the Inspector General of Police, said Wani was arrested by the BSF and then handed over to police in a wounded condition.

His condition deteriorated and he succumbed on way to a hospital, the report added.

The SHRC directed the state government to pay Rs one lakh as relief to the family of the deceased and a job to his widow.

The commission also asked the state government to devise a mechanism for seeking accountability of those responsible for causing injuries and torture to a person.
