New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) The current width of Jessore Road -- the main link with Bangladesh -- is not adequate to cope with the growing amount of traffic and it will be widened under Phase III of the National Highway Developemnt Project (NHDP), the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa said, in a written reply, that responsibility for a portion of the road (68.4 Kms), which starts from the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport to the border with Bangladesh is with the Central Governemnt. This comprises a length of 8.80 km of NH-34 from the airport to Barasat and entire length of 59.60 km of NH-35. The width of NH-34 is two-lane or more, while NH-35 is mostly of intermediate lane width except for the end portion (about three km), which is divided into a dual intermediate lane carriageway.

These National Highways are being maintained in trafic worthy condition with the available funds, the Minister said, adding that the government has already planned widening of these to 4/6 lanes under Phase-III of the NHDP on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis and preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) is in progress. It is too early to indicate time frame for completion of the above said work, he said.
