New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) The Government today ruled out increasing the Foreign Direct Investment in private FM radio and allowing news and current affairs programmes on it.

Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs P R Dasmunsi told the Lok Sabha that private FM broadcasters were free to air broadcasts of audio on main carrier and data on sub carriers both excluding news and current affairs.

The demand for allowing news on FM radio has been voiced quite often, but the government has rejected it on the grounds that news was a sensitive matter which could not be left in the hands of so many localised broadcasters as it will be very difficult to keep track of their content.

At present as many as 57 private FM radiostations are operational.

The Government is soon going to auction licence for operating over 90 FM radion stations for which bids were not received in the Phase II of the liberalisation of radio.

The process for transmitting FM radio far and wide in the country began last year when licences for 250 radio station across 91 cities were sold.
