Fire in a police station damage arms and ammunition in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 16 (UNI) Panic gripped in the Nowgam bypass area on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway when loud explosions were heard in a police station this afternoon.

Official sources said fire broke out in the police station at Nowgam, about 10 km from here due to short circuit at 1600 hours.

The fire spread to a room where arms and ammunition was kept, causing loud explosions.

People, shopkeepers and Road Opening Party (ROP) of security forces and police, who were present in the area, ran for cover after they mistook it a fidayeen attack on the police station.

Fire tenders from different stations were rushed to the area to control the flames.

However, another unconfirmed report said-mine blast caused fire in the police station.
