New Delhi, May 15 (UNI) CPI member Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) today urged the Centre to intervene and restore the jobs of more than 700 employees who were retrenched by multinational companies without chargesheets.

''It is pathetic the way the workers are being tormented by the MNCs. More than 700 workers have been retrenched by multinationals in different parts of the country without chargesheets,'' Mr Dasgupta said, raising the issue in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour.

''The MNCs have misunderstood the policy of liberalisation and used it to retrench workers,'' he said.

When he demanded the Centre's intervention, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said it was a state subject in which the Centre had no say.

Mr Anwar Hussain (Cong) demanded that the National Register of Citizens of 1951 should be updated, as agreed to in the Assam Accord, to end police harassment of Asomese living in different parts of the country.
