Mumbai, May 15 (UNI) Opposition leader in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Raj Hans Singh, has expressed dissatisfaction with the ''nullah'' cleaning operations in the city ahead of the monsoons.

The BMC has signed a Rs 72-crore two-year contract with a private contractor who has claimed that the ''nullahs'' would be cleaned before the onset of monsoons in such a manner that the ''bottom of the nullahs would be visible''.

So far, as per BMC reports, 57 per cent of the ''nullahs'' have been cleaned.

BMC Standing Committee chairman Ravindra Waikar has emphasised that the remaining work will be completed before the monsoon sets in. ''We know how to get the work done,'' he has sounded.

Mr Singh has, however, disputed the BMC claims about the work completion. He alleged that the work was progressing at a very slow pace and the ''nullahs'' in Kurla have not yet been cleaned.

Even the ''nullahs'' in his own ward, despite he being the opposition leader, have not been cleaned, Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh alleged that the BMC and the MMRDA were at loggerheads as to who should clear up the silt and this has hindered the cleaning work along the Mithi River.
