Srinagar, May 14 (UNI) Three senior politicians of Jammu and Kashmir today criticised a section of media for ''highly mischievous'' reporting about the proceedings of the all party meeting convened by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad here on May 12 and tried to set the records straight by presenting the ''true facts'' of the event.
Addressing a joint news conference here, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami and Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF) chairman Hakim Mohammad Yaseen said the ''misreporting'' about a particular event amounted to ''breach of trust'' and disinformation.
''It appears that a section of media, ostensibly, misinformed by certain vested interest, has chosen to project a distorted version of the proceedings of the all party meet,'' the two said in a joint statement released at the news conference.
''Unfortunately, the views put forth by us (Mr Tarigami and Hakim Yaseen) in the meeting have been reported out of context, conveying a sense contrary to their import and meaning. This seems to be a deliberate attempt to mislead the public opinion, motivated by narrow partisan interests. This highly mischievous reporting is unacceptable to us,'' they said.
''In this backdrop, it has become incumbent upon us to set the records straight by placing the true facts before the media and through it to the people,'' the two leaders said.
Both Mr Tarigami and Hakim Yaseen sought to clear the air about their respective presentations in the all party meeting.
Despite sharp differences on various issues, they said the meet was held in a cordial atmosphere and in which sincere efforts were made to appreciate each others viewpoint.
''Of course, there was unanimity on certain issues which is testified by the fact that all the participants agreed to the constitution of two committees by the Chief Minister on the issues of normal delimitation, redrawing of boundaries and rotation of reserved constituencies,'' the statement said.
Briefing the media, Mr Tarigami said there was no denying the fact that over the issue of 25 per cent increase in the Assembly seats, different regions of Jammu and Kashmir compete for larger shares, citing real or perceived sense of deprivation.
''On this issue, we took a forthright stand that the plea of real or perceived sense of discrimination with the Jammu region must be seen against the background of human tragedies in the Kashmir valley. We stated that the denial of democratic rights to the people of the Valley, for decades, was now grudgingly or frankly accepted almost universally,'' he said.
