Rally demands martyrs' memorial at India Gate, pension for families

New Delhi, May 14 (UNI) Several members of the '1857 Azad Hind Mahasangh' today organised a rally at India Gate roundabout to press the government to set up a memorial of martyrs at the historic monument.

Mahasangh's conveynor P S Verma told UNI that setting up a memorial at the India Gate would be an apt tribute to the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the freedom of the country.

''The move is significant as the 1857 revolt triggered the nationalist fervour across the country which was reeling under imperialist yoke.'' We have also written to the President and Prime Minister to take due steps in addressing the grievances and rights of those whose ancestors' lands were usurped by the British because of their participation in the 'nationalist movement', he said.

''We demand that the families of martyrs be given pension and the correct history of 'shaheeds' be writted in his 150th year of that great event,'' he added.
