Una, 14 May (UNI) As part of the election campaign for the Hamirpur Parliamentary by-elections, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today addressed public meetings at Dharamsala Mahantan, Koharchan and Beher Jaswan villages of Chintpurni Assembly segment.

He was accompanied by local legislator Rakesh Kalia, Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Minister Kaul Singh thakur and Industries Minister Kuldip Kumar.

Addressing these gatherings, Mr Singh said BJP's candidate, Prem Kumar Dhumal, was a reluctant contestant due to an ongoing tussle between him and former union minister Shanta Kumar.

He said that even Mr Dhumal's close confidants were favouring his defeat so that he remained in reckoning for the post of the state's chief minister after next assembly elections.

Referring to the reasons why the by-polls were being held, the chief minister said sitting BJP MP was suspended after being caught on camera accepting bribe in the infamous ''cash for query scam''.

The people of the state would not forgive the BJP for the acts of its member who has since been suspended from the Parliament, he said.

Mr. Singh called upon the people of the state to vote for the party's candidate Ram Lal Thakur.
