BHEL to invest in Bangladesh power sector

Agartala, May 14 (UNI) India's leading company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited(BHEL) wants to set up a mega power project in eastern Bangladesh.

Quoting Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pinak Ranjan Chakraborty, official sources here today said that BHEL was likely to invest in the power sector as the neighbouring country runs a shortfall of 3,500 MW power every day.

Bangladesh had also approached India to allow importing diesel from Numaligarh Refinery in Asom following acute shortage of fuel, officials said, adding ''Bangladesh wants to import 120,000 tonnes of diesel per annum to manage growing demand of vehicular fuel''.

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has asked the Indian envoy to continue sustained action against Indian militants taking shelter in Bangladesh, provide transit facilities to carry goods from the rest of the country to the north eastern states via Bangladesh and start a direct bus service between Agartala and Kolkata through Bangladesh.

Mr Sarkar had also requested the Indian envoy to take up the matter with the Bangladesh government for allowing the Chittagong international port for carrying goods from the NE states.

Chittagong international port is just 75 km from south Tripura's border sub-division of Sabroom.
