20 Cong workers injured in police lathicharge
Indore, May 14 (UNI) More than 20 Congress workers were injured today when police used batons on partymen, who gheraoed the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to protest the cessation of distribution of pension to the destitute and drinking water problems, besides other demands.
The Congress workers also submitted a memorandum to the Indore Divisional Commissioner for Governor Balram Jakhar seeking a magisterial inquiry into the police excesses.
As per the pre-scheduled programme, Congress workers, led by party city president Pramod Tandon, gheraoed the IMC office where strong police arrangement was in place.
Congress leaders alleged that neither the IMC Mayor nor the Commissioner came up to receive their memorandum. Angered by this, women started breaking pitchers.
As police started to disperse the crowd, Congress workers resorted to stone-pelting.
Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Srivastava said police then resorted to a lathicharge and lobbed 10 rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The Congress leaders alleged that 20 party workers, including eight women, were injured.
City Congress President Pramod Tandon and other leaders approached the divisional commissioner to complain about police excesses.
