Farmers block traffic on NH8 in protest against Gurgaon SEZ

Gurgaon, May 13 (UNI) Farmers from villages in and around Gurgaon today took to streets and blocked traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway 8 here in protest against the acquisition of their land on prices below market rates by the Government for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Traffic on the busy highway was blocked for hours as the farmers protested in large numbers.

Demanding adequate compensation for their land, the farmers alleged that the Government had purchased the land at far lesser rates from them.

Traffic resumed only after a large number of police and security personnel managed to clear the expressway.

Reliance is setting up a SEZ spread over 10,000 hectares in Haryana and is was working on a 8,000-hectare zone in Gurgaon, while Omaxe intended to set up a 6,000-hectare enclave also in Haryana.
