'1857 uprising marked begining of freedom struggle'

Darbhanga, May 13: Renowned educationist and Vice-Chancellor of Lalit Narain Mithila University, Mishri Lal Thakur, today described the 1857 uprising as the 'beginning of Indian freedom struggle' and advocated that people should draw lessons from it. Addressing a seminar to mark the 150th anniversary of the famous uprising, Dr Thakur said the next generation was justifiably inspired by it to fight corruption even as the movement had failed because of lack of proper leadership.

Senior political analyst, Jitendra Narayan, said the movement marked the end of Company rule (East India Company) in the country and the beginning of a new era of Indian history.

Through the 'Divide and Rule' policy the British were able to establish a strong foothold in the country, he felt and observed that the next generation must work for the communal harmony to ensure a comprehensive socio-political and religious equality for setting up of an egalitarian society.
