Mercury rises in Punjab, but declines in Haryana
Chandigarh, May 12 (UNI) The mercury again rose in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh despite rains in the hilly state but declined in Haryana today.
While the mercury showed upward movement at Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bhuntar, Sundernagar and Una, the temperatures dropped at Hissar, Ambala and Karnal.
Hissar reeled under intense heat even as the maximum plummeted to 40.2 degrees celsius. Ambala and Karnal also showed a decline in the temperatures hovering three degrees and four degrees below normal at respective places. Ambala recorded 36.0 degrees and Karnal 35.0 degrees.
The temperatures again soared in Punjab with the holy city of Amritsar recording 38.8 degrees, one degree above normal. Ludhiana and Patiala also recorded increase in the temperatures which, however, stood three degrees below normal. Ludhiana showed 37.0 degrees and Patiala 36.6 degrees.
The temperatures also increased in Himachal Pradesh even as the state experienced showers at many places, including Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Pandoh,Rampur, Sunjabpur Tira, naudan, Guler, nagrota Surian, Bhang-Manali and Solang Nullah overnight.
Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded 28.2 degrees, three degrees below normal, while Sundernagar in Mandi district registered 32.4 degrees celsius. The temperature remained almost static at state capital of Shimla recording 24.4 degrees which was one degree above normal. The capital town also reported rainfall.
There was no change in prevailing weather conditions in Chandigarh as the temperature remained stationary at 38.4 degrees for the past three days.
The Met office predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and duststorm or thunderstorm with light to moderate rain at few places in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.
Hailstorm or thundersquall with speed exceeding 45 km per hour is likely to occur at isolated places in the region during the period.
