CPI seeks action against 'Dinakaran' attackers
Madurai, May 12 (UNI) The CPI today joined the anti-Azhagiri platform by seeking ''prompt and expeditious action'' into the attack on Tamil daily 'Dinakaran', but stopped short of demanding the arrest of M K Azhagiri, whose supporters were allegedly involved in the arson and violence.
Addressing a demonstration organised by the party to condemn the attack on 'Dinakaran' and the death of its three employees, CPI Tamil Nadu secretary D Pandian said the Government should dispel the impression that it was protecting those who were behind the violence.
He charged the police with 'aiding and abetting' the crime and sought the transfer of top police officials of the district besides initiating penal action for dereliction of duty.
The Government, he said should not allow a power centre which thrived on promoting and patronising rowdyism. Failure to contain this ugly phenomenon would make the people lose faith in the democratic system.
He said the violence in the city posed a grave danger to democracy and freedom of expression.
