Two people die due to heat stroke in Bathinda

Chandigarh, May 11 (UNI) Two people died due to heat stroke in Bathinda even as the mercury hovered below normal at most places in Punjab and Haryana following rainfall in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

Raj Kumar and Bhupinder Kumar succumbed to intense heat wave at Bathinda which turned out to be the hottest place in Punjab with the temperarture soaring to 43 degrees celsius.

Three others suffering from heat stroke were admitted to a hospital there, a report from Bathinda said.

With these deaths, the toll due to heat wave and lightning rose to eight in Punjab during this summer.

The mercury fell by four degrees at Ludhiana recording 36.0 degrees while Patiala registered 38.8 degrees, one degree below normal. The holy city of Amritsar, which reeled under intense heat during the past week, also recorded a fall in the temperature to 36.6 degrees celsius, one degree below normal.

Hissar, which usually remains the hottest place in Haryana, recorded the maximum at 42.4 degrees, while the mercury strayed one degree below normal at Ambala and Karnal respectively showing 38.3 degrees and 37.8 degrees celsius.

Hot weather conditions also prevailed in Chandigarh and its adjoining areas and dusty winds swept the city during the day. The temperature remained stationary at 38.4 degrees in the city.

Light to moderate rain lashed some areas in Himachal Pradesh, providing respite to people from soaring temperatures. The temperature dipped to 31.4 degrees at Sundernagar in Mandi district and to 25.1 degrees, six degrees below normal, at Bhuntar in Kullu district following rainfall. Una recorded 34.6 degrees and Shimla 24.7 degrees celsius.

The Met office predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh and few places in Punjab and duststorm or thunderstorm with light to moderate rain at few places in Haryana during the next 24 hours.

Hailstorm or thundersquall with speed exceeding 45 km per hour is likely to occur at isolated places in the region during the period.
