Baramulla, May 11 (UNI) Troops shot at and injured one mentally-challenged person due to mistaken identity in north Kashmir, official sources said.

Sources said a mentally-challenged person, Ghulam Nabi Bhat, was passing near the camp of 46 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) last night when troops signalled him to stop.

Sources said Bhat did not stop and this led troops to open fire.

He was admitted to a hospital with injuries, sources added.

However, residents alleged that troops fired without any provocation and justification.

A number of people have died in firing due to mistaken identity in different parts of the Kashmir valley, mostly during the night.

This has prompted district and defence authorities to direct residents living near the Line of Control and other areas to avoid movement during the night. They have also been adviced to carry a lantern or any other light to avoid any such incident.

The authorities have already imposed night curfew in the five km border belt to curb any militant movement.
