Ten members of a family killed; 2 children injured in road accident

Baripada, May 11 (UNI) In a tragic incident ten members, five women and as many men, of a family were killed on the spot and two children seriously injured when the vehicle carrying them collided head-on with a tanker at Chadheibhol here today.

Police said the accident occurred when a Badagaon-bound jeep rammed into a Keonjhar-bound oil tanker near Chadheibhol, about 155 Km from here under Karanjia police station limits, on Mumbai-Kolkata National Highway six.

One of the two injured children was shifted to the S C B Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

Sources said the vehicle was so badly damaged that it had become difficult to extract the bodies trapped under it. Gas-cutters had to be brought from Karanjia to extricate the bodies.

The family members were coming to Badgaon village near Tato to perform a ''Saado'' ritual for a girl from their family married to a groom of Badagaon in Mayurbhanj. But the auspicious occasion was marred by the road mishap in which the family of Kantiapada village in Keonjhar district died on the spot.

The driver of the ill-fated jeep identified as Biju Sethi (23) succumbed to his injuries died at Karanjia Hospital.
