Par adjourned till May 14 for 1857 anniversary

New Delhi, May 11: Both the Houses of Parliament were today adjourned till Monday in view of various functions in connection with the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee in memory of the 1857 martyrs in deference to the unanimous request by the House.

As soon as the House assembled for the day, Mr Basudeb Acharia (CPM) stood up and requested the Speaker to adjourn the house in deference to the memory of all those who laid down their lives in India's first War of Independence.

When Mr Devendra Prasad Singh of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and others endorsed the request, the Speaker, while stating that he was the servant of the House, adjourned the proceedings for the day and announced that the House will meet on Monday.

In the Rajya Sabha, minutes after the House assembled for the day, Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat announced that he had been instructed to suspend the proceedings for the day to allow members to participate in various functions being held to pay tributes to the heroes of 1857 War of Independence.
