Ten of a family killed in road accident

Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, May 10 (UNI) Ten members of a family were killed and a ten-year-old boy injured in a head on collision involving a van and a State-owned bus at Savalaperi near Kovilpatti town in the district, today.

The victims, including five women, hailing from Tiruchirapalli, were proceeding in the van on a pilgrimage to a dargah in Tirunelveli district and the bus bound for Madurai was coming from Nagercoil when the accident occurred.

While eight of the victims died on the spot, the other two succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The van was smashed under the impact of the collision.

On receiving information, officials rushed to the spot to oversee relief and rescue operations.

The deceased were identified as Liaqat Ali (64), Jaffar Nissa (68), Adhima Beevi (50), Qamar Nissaa Alima (24), Fathima (22), Sheffreen Bhanu (13), Fahrunnissa Begam (16), Anees Ahmed (16), Shakheel (3) and the van driver Kannan (26).

Police arrested the bus driver Kannan (27) of Madurai.
