Rally organised to celebrate 150th year of Revolt of 1857
Barrackpore, May 10 (UNI) The Directorate of Field Policy(DFP), West Bengal South Region, today organised a students' rally at Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas to celebrate the 150th anniversary of India's First War of Independence.
About 150 students congregated at the Shahid Mangal Pandey Memorial(SMPM) and offered floral tributes.
The participants then paraded from the SMPM upto the Gandhi Museum.
The local schools, the GM and the Shahid Mangal Pandey Commemorative Committee contributed for the rally.
At the Museum, the speakers highlighted the historical importance of Barrackpore in the 1857 War of Independence and our freedom struggle.
Director of the Museum Prof Supriya Munshi, local MLA Santanu Palodhi, among others, addressed the gathering.
On March 29, 1857, the sepoys at Barrackpore had refused to use the greased cartridges and attacked the Adjutant.
Mangal Pandey was hanged to death on April 8, 1857 and therefore he is described as the first martyr of India's independence.
