LS adjourned over Shiela's remarks; CM tenders apology

New Delhi, May 10 (UNI) The Lok Sabha was thrown into turmoil today over Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's remarks against the influx of people into the city from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states.

BJP members protested against the remarks and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, leading to disruption of proceedings in the Lower House and later its adjournment for the day by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

Following uproar caused in various parts of the country, including in Parliament, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit apologised for the hurt caused by her statement.

''I am sorry to learn that the Lok Sabha was agitated over my alleged statement and the House could not discharge its functions. I sincerely regret and extend my apology for this unfortunate happening,'' the Chief Minister said in a written statement released by her at a jam-packed press conference here.

''I am fully aware of the constributions made by people coming from outside, especially from UP and Bihar, in the development of Delhi,'' she added.

The Congress, meanwhile, said the matter relating to the controvesy should be ''dropped'' after the apology tendered by her.

Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here that the Chief Minister had already stated that there was no intention on her part to hurt the feelings of anybody by her remark.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad also described as ''unfortunate'' and ''injudicious'' the alleged statement by Ms Dikshit, but called for bringing down the curtains on the controversy in view of her apology.

Demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister, the Delhi BJP staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here and burnt Ms Dikshit in effigy.

In Bihar, people burnt effigies of Ms Dikshit, protesting against her remarks and demanded her resignation.

Similar protests were also organsied in other parts of the state where supporters of different political parties, including the BJP and the Janta Dal (United), burnt her in effigy and shouted anti-UPA slogans.
