Kolkata, May 10 (UNI) A 14-member joint delegation of Chhatra Parishad and the Mahila Congress would call on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to seek her intervention for reopening closed tea gardens in North Bengal.

The delegation would meet Ms Gandhi on May 30 and apprise her the situation of the workers in the tea gardens.

CP president Sourav Chakraborty told a news conference here today that non-implementation of mid-day meal and failure of state government to provide some basic amenities forced thousands there to spend in misries. The delegation would submit a memorandum to Ms Gandhi with a urge to ensure reopening of 19 closed tea estates in Jalpaiguri district.

Memoranda would also be given to union minister Jairam Ramesh and Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi for tasking necessary action for reopening the tea gardens, Mr Chakraborty said.

Highlighting the sitution in Nandigram, he said as many as 74 primary and higher secondary schools have been closed after March 14 killings, Mr chakraborty said.

" We have taken several agitational programmes including the protest rally tomorrow throughout the state, sit-in agitation in Central Calcutta on May 15 and students rally in Dankuni on May 17", he added.
