Committee to review RITES' report on transport project in city

Chandigarh, May 10 (UNI) The Chandigarh Administration has constituted a 10-member committee to review the detailed report submitted by M/s RITES, a Government of India Enterprise, for Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) project in Chandigarh.

Mr K C Sivaramakrishnan, Chairman of Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi, will be the Chairman of the Committee which has been asked to submit its report within a period of 90 days.

The committee would review the report in respect of the population forecast, transport needs for current and future population and for suggesting integrated traffic and transportation plan for Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali etc.

The services of RITES were utilised by the Chandigarh Administration for the study on preparation of the feasibility report for MRTS for Chandigarh Urban Complex. In its report, it had projected 20.82 lakh population in 2011 and 31.74 lakh in 2021.

The Committee would also evaluate all available public transport options and suggest the best-suited option as per the local conditions. The committee would keep into account the city's unique architectural design and other characteristics as well as future growth potential while reviewing the project.

The Committee would suggest financing mechanism of the project, including public- private partnership. It would also suggest the suitable bye passes, ring roads, flyovers and truck terminal points outside the city limits.

Chief Engineer, Chandigarh, Mr V K Bhardwaj would be the Convener of the Committee.
