BJP group meets Prez, demands Telangana state
New Delhi, May 10: A BJP delegation led by senior party leader Sushma Swaraj today called on President A P J Abdul Kalam, seeking his direction to the UPA Government to bring in a legislation for creating a separate state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.
The delegation, which submitted a three-page memorandum to the President, drew his attention to the UPA's government's manifesto in which it had promised to carve out a separate state of Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.
The memorandum charged the government with "deliberately keeping the issue alive" to exploit it in the 2009 elections. Therefore, it was rather more imperative that once Telangana became a reality, the political parties would not be able to make it an electoral issue.
The BJP delegation cautioned that delay in creating Telangana state was leading to mutual distrust and the situation might develop to threat harmony in the region.
It said the NDA had upheld the aspiration of the people by creating three separate states of Uttaranchal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand for proper development of the respective region.
The same logic would be true for Telangana which remained backward due to neglect by the successive government in Andhra Pradesh.
