Srinagar, May 9 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Vigilance Organisation has attached a property of a former official of the Lakes and Waterways Development Department Authority (LAWDA).

The vigilance organisation attached the land, worth more than Rs 25 lakh, owned by Showkat Ali Chalak, the then LAWDA senior assistant, under the amended Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Corruption Act, 2006.

The vigilance had registered a case against Chalak on October 6 last year.

It was prima-facie established that the accused had accumulated movable and immovable assets highly disproportionate to his known sources of income through corrupt means.

During investigations, the house search of the accused was conducted which led to the recovery of incriminating documents relating to the movable and immovable assets, including Rs eight lakh deposited in various banks and insurance companies, 600 gm of gold ornaments, cash worth Rs 86,000 and a Maruti Car purchased in the name of his son.

The inquiry further revealed that the accused had incurred an expenditure of Rs 50 lakh on the education of his children outside the state and the UK. The accused was also in possession of eight kanals of land located at different places.
