Fake encounter: Twin probes fail to calm turmoil in upper Asom

Tinsukia, May 9 (UNI) Even as the Army ordered a separate inquiry into the killing of Budheswar Moran and the state government announced rehabilitation sops to the victim's family, tension ran high in upper Asom today.

For the fourth consecutive day today, road communication on the National Highways 37 and 52 was snapped due to protests in the insurgency-affected Tinsukia district.

The Army ordered a separate ''impartial inquiry'' into the killing of Moran by troops of the 6 T&K Light Infantry at Doomdooma on May 6 last.

Categorically stating that there were lapses in the incident, GOC of the 2nd Mountain Division Lt Gen NC Mawra said, '' An impartial inquiry has been ordered into the incident to identify the lapses and exemplary punishment would be given to the guilty officials. '' The State Government had also instituted an inquiry by Upper Asom Commissioner Hemanta Narzary.

As part of the inquiry, the Commissioner conducted hearings at Doomdooma today. The report will be submitted within a month.

Meanwhile, the Asom Government has announced a grant of Rs three lakh for the rehabilitation of the victim's family.

''The Chief Minister is very much concerned about the killing of innocent people in the name of anti-insurgency operation. Such incident should not happen. The government will take responsibility of the family,'' state government spokesperson Pradyut Bordoloi told reporters in tisukia.
