Effective mechanism for enviornmental clearance of projects

Chandigarh, May 9 (UNI) The Punjab Government would evolve an effective mechanism for giving environmental and other related clearances to mega projects so as to speed up the process of development in the state.

Disclosing this here today Science, Technology and Environment Minister Bikram Singh Majithia took strong exception to what he described as a ''mischievous and misleading'' statement of Capt Amarinder Singh, in which the former chief minister had feigned ignorance about the revocation of NOCs of mega projects during the fag end of his controversial tenure.

Mr Majithia accused Capt Singh of misrepresenting facts regarding the implementation of the order passed by Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) revoking the NOCs of certain projects and withdrawing the recommendations of the land use change of the industrial parks and estates.

He stated that the order on revoking NOCs of certain projects was passed on February 17 when the Congress government was still in the saddle. ''Capt Singh kept hiding this fact from the electorate fearing possible backlash in the elections'', the minister added.
