Jaipur, May 9 (UNI) A pregnant woman from Jalore district, who sought President of India's permission for abortion, citing failure of family planning method, would now have to continue her pregnancy as per the report of the medical board.

The medical board comprising three doctors, who examined Bhuridevi in Jalore said the foetus was 21 weeks and five days old and could not be aborted as per medical rules.

Dr Kishan Singh Rathore, CMHO, Jalore said as the foetus was 21 weeks old, it meant that Bhuridevi had conceived before going in for tubectomy. So, her pregnancy could not be considered as failure of the family planning method. She would, however, be given free medicines till the birth of her child, he added.

Bhuridevi, mother of three children and a resident of Rajikawas village, in a letter submitted to the Sub-Divisional Officer, had sought the permission of the President for aborting her three-month-old pregnancy as she could not afford another child.

She had said she went in for tubectomy at the government hospital in Jaswantpura on January 8 this year but conceived again due to the failure of the operation.

She wrote that either she should be permitted to undergo abortion or the government should give an undertaking to bear the cost of child rearing.

There is a provision of Rs 25,000 insurance cover against failure of the family planning method.
