Delimitation: Police foils BJP attempt to block Prime Minister
Guwahati, May 9 (UNI) Hundreds of BJP activists, protesting the delimitation of constituencies, took out a rally in Guwahati today, seeking to draw the attention of Prime Minister Monmohan Singh, who was here to file his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha elections.
The saffron brigade marched this morning from the party's North East office towards Raj Bhavan, where the prime minister had been staying since last night.
Security personnel erected three barricades to prevent the protesters from disrupting the prime minister's journey from Raj Bhavan to the Asom Legislative Assembly where he filed his nomination papers. Though the protesters broke open one of the police barricades, two other blockades prevented them from proceeding towards the Raj Bhavan.
A BJP spokesperson said no one was injured in the incident.
The party had vehemently opposed the final draft of the delimitation commission as flawed and irrational.
''The delimitation panel had ignored the aspirations of the indigenous people, paving the way for the illegal migrants to take control of the affairs,;; the party said in a statement.
That the delimitation exercise had been carried out on the basis of the existing voters' list, it might lead to serious consequences, and preparation of voters list after the repeal of the notorious IM(DT) Act might be radically different in a number of constituencies.
Besides, redrawing of a number of constituencies had been done, overlooking the contiguity of areas, conveniences and natural barriers, the BJP said.
