Srinagar, May 8 (UNI) The moderate Hurriyat Conference has reacted strongly to a statement by the Hizbul Mujahideen about its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and asked the militant outfit to leave political matters to the political leadership only.

In a statement here, a Hurriyat spokesman said it would be in the larger interest of the ongoing ''freedom movement'' if the political matters were left to the political leadership only.

''The stand of the Hurriyat Conference and its chairman on the Kashmir issue is very clear. We are at a loss to understand at whose behest the statements against Hurriyat leaders are being issued and whose interests these are serving,'' he added.

The spokesman said the ongoing ''freedom movement'' was not a fiefdom of any particular person or party. ''The internationally recognised Hurriyat leadership know it fully well what is good for the movement and what is detrimental to its interests,'' he added.

He said the voices for ''freedom'' and rights of the people were being raised since 1931 from the historical stage of Jamia Masjid and this would continue till the final settlement of the Kashmir issue.

The spokesman expressed surprise over the Hizb spokesman's statement hailing the remarks of pro-India people and criticising the pro-movement leadership.

''Such statements do disservice to the freedom movement and strengthen the hands of anti-movement elements. The Hizb should desist from issuing such irresponsible statements,'' he said.

Hizb spokesman Junaid-ul-Islam, in a statement, had asked the moderate Hurriyat chairman to stop preaching peace process during his Friday sermons at the historic Jamia Masjid.

He also ridiculed Mirwaiz for his statement that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were being labelled as ''saleable commodity''.

''The Mirwaiz's statement that Kashmiris were being labelled as saleable commodity is far from truth. The label fits the political leadership as they change their stances like seasons. They (Hurriyat leaders) violated the amalgam constitution and established relations and started negotiations with India,'' the Hizb spokesman added.

Despite fully knowing the amount of sacrifices made by the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesman said some political leaders were changing their colours like the four seasons to suit their personal and vested interests. ''Trusting India is like committing suicide.'' He said some leaders, for their vested interests, form new parties and change their loyalties while the people of the state remained steadfast to their cause and continued to offer sacrifices.

''Mirwaiz should stop advocating the peace process from the historic Jamia Masjid while delivering Friday sermons. Like his grandfather Maulana Mohammad Yousuf Shah, he should preach freedom and jehad,'' the spokesman said.

He said Mirwaiz should not be talking of the peace process if he really respected the sacrifices of the people, but give a call for a ''struggle'' from the Jamia Masjid.
