Punjab police seize Rs 30 lakh banned, unauthorised pharma drugs

Amritsar, May 8 (UNI) In one of the biggest seizures of psychotropic and synthetic drugs, the Punjab Police in a joint operation with the state drugs control department recovered banned and 'unauthorised' drugs valued at about Rs 30 lakh from four pharmaceutical shops in Moga town this evening.

Giving details IGP Border Range R P Meena said here that the seized drugs included intraveinous injections including morphine and norphine, which the owner of the drug stores was not permitted to sell. He said that all the four shops were owned by a single owner.

Mr Meena who organised the raid after informing the Moga police said that the seized items included 10,000 bottles of cough syrups, about one lakh tablets of a banned drug and a large quantity of norphine and morphine injections. He said that the drug owner did not have the license to sell the seized drugs.

Mr Meena said that the total value of the seizure could be around Rs 30 lakh. He said that the raid was organised after informing Health Minister Ms Laxmi Kanta Chawla and the state Drugs Controller Bhag Singh was part of the raiding party.

The IGP said that a number of persons had been detained in this connection and are being questioned.
