Protest over 'Fake encounter': Wife on fast, roads blocked

Tinsukia, May 8 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Upper Asom for the third day today as villagers blocked national highways and held meetings protesting the killing of Budheswar Moran, by the Army in Tinsukia district on May 6.

Traffic movement was affected as over 6,000 protesters blocked the highway at various places of Tinsukia district- Doomdooma, Kakopathar and Tipok. Four districts of Arunachal Pradesh remained cut-off from Asom for the second day today.

Moran's wife, Sangita had declined to take food since Sunday as she joined the protesters with her three children, including a three-month infant.

Meanwhile, the body of Moran still lay at the Tinsukia morgue, and the victim's family has refused to accept it.

The agitating villagers, supported by various organizations, including the AASU, PCPIA, AJYCP and Moran Students Union, demanded suspension of Army operations in the state.

The protesters also demanded compensation to the family of the victim, besides a judicial probe into the incident.

The administration has been sent into a tizzy in the wake of the agitation even as security arrangements were tightened to avert any untoward incident.
