Petition filed in SC against dam in AP

New Delhi, May 8 (UNI) PMK MLA from Tamil Nadu G K Mani today moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to the state of Andhra Pradesh not to go ahead with the construction of dam across Palar river to divert the flow of water.

The Palar river flows across three states ,namely, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu having total catchment area of 18,300 sq km which include 3,123 sq km in Karnataka, 4,267 sq km in Andhra Pradesh and 10,910 sq km in Tamil Nadu.

The river originates in Nandhi Durg in Kolar district of Karnataka at an elevation of 800 m above mean sea level(MSL).

The petitioner has contended that the action of state of Andhra Pradesh violates the fundamental right to life of the people of Tamil Nadu.Millions in Tamil Nadu are dependent on the water of Palar river.

The petitioner has appealed to the court to restrain Andhra Pradesh from constructing dam at Ganeshapuram, Kuppam taluk or at any other place till the final disposal of this writ petition.

The Central government is also a party to the writ.
