New Delhi, May 8 (UNI) The Standing Committee of Municipal Corporation of Delhi today passed a resolution urging the Centre to extend by two years the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, which provided for exemption from sealing to all shops in the city till January 1, 2006.

The resolution, introduced in the Standing Committee by Deputy chairman Yogender Chandolia, urged the Centre to extend by two years the expiry date of the Act from the stipulated date of May 19.

According to the resolution, the extension was necessary as the finalisation of the Delhi Master Plan 2021 was still under scrutiny of the Supreme Court and also because the total objects of the Act had not been achieved within the stipulated period of one year from the date of its commencement.

While the BJP members supported the resolution, the opposition Congress vehemently opposed it with the Leader of the Opposition in the MCD House, Jaikishen Sharma, entering the well charging the BJP of going against the Master Plan.

It is notable that the legislation was passed in the Lok Sabha last year to give exemption from sealing to shop existing before January 1, 2006.
