Jamia to set up Centre for North East Indian Studies

New Delhi, May 8 (UNI) Jamia Millia Islamia University will soon set up the Centre for North East Indian Studies, the first of its kind in a central university.

The Executive Council of the University has passed a proposal to set up the Centre and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Jamia and the Gauhati-based Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES) will be signed soon, a Jamia spokesperson said.

The proposed centre will work like a think tank on North East which will draw upon the expertise of C-NES, a registered trust with over seven years experience as a research and alternative policy centre.

The Jamia Centre shall focus on ways and means to strengthen academic research and develop policy alternatives on the geographical entity of northeastern India, covering Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim and West Bengal besides neighbouring Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Tibet and China.

Jamia Millia Islamia has made a proposal of about Rs 2.26 crore and shall shortly be applying to University Grants Commission (UGC) for funding, the spokesperson said.

The Centre will also look issues pertaining to environment and sustainable development, river studies, history, culture, gender and infrastructual challenges.
