Bhubaneswar, May 8 (UNI)In a bid to make birth registration universal and people-oriented in Orissa, the state government has decided to give authority to the doctors to issue instant birth certificates.

A high level meeting, presided over by the State Health Secretary Chinmaya Basu here agreed to designate the medical officers in the new Primary Health centre (PHC) as Sub-Registrar and the Assistant District Medical Officer (ADMO) as well as Sub Divisional medical officer (SDMO) as Additional Registrar to issue birth certificates.

While the medical officer in the PHC would issue the birth certificates in his jurisdiction, the ADMO and the SDMO would issue the certificate in their respective hospitals.

Regarding this, an amendment would be made in the law to provide the authority to the doctors at the PHC and the ADMO and SDMO to issue the birth certificates free of cost.

The state government, in 1980s, had made the doctors at the Block level Primary health centre and the Community health centre as registrars to issue the birth certificate.
