Thiruvananthapuram, May 8 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (CPI), an ally in the Left Democratic Front government in Kerala, today demanded a new legislation to tide over the Supreme Court verdict allowing the consortium of private unaided colleges in the state to conduct a Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to medical and engineering courses during the coming academic year.

''Immediately after the state High Court struck down certain provisions of the Kerala Professional Colleges Act 2006, passed by the state Assembly, we had suggested the government to come up with a new legislation instead of going for an appeal in the Supreme Court,'' he said addressing a press conference.

The apex court's verdict, granting freedom to the private managements to collect fess and admission at their will, would invite serious implications, he warned, and said it would not be allowed at any cost.

Mr Bharghavan suggested that the government should convene an all party meeting and reach a consensus with all concerned in this regard, before bringing in the new legislation.

It should also hold discussions with the private managements for a settlement and force them to abide by the conditions of 50:50 ratio in admission, reached at the meeting held during the Congress regime, he added.

On the encroachment of government land at Munnar in Idukki, the CPI leader said the government would file criminal cases against the officials, who gave all support to the encroachers and those who encroached the land.
