Charges framed against Thandal in disproportionate assets case

Ropar, May 8 (UNI) A local court today ordered the framing of charges against former Punjab Minister of state for food and supplies and present Akali MLA from Mahilpur Sohan Singh Thandal in a disproportionate assets case.

However, the court ordered the dropping of charges against him under section 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of IPC. The court also discharged the co-accused Nirman Singh from the case.

Special Judge, Ropar, G.S.Saran had completed the hearing of arguments by the defence and prosecution counsels on the farming of charges on May 3 last and had reserved his orders for today.

The Judge ordered the framing of charges against Thandal under section 13(1)(e) and 13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act.

Thandal was booked by Punjab Vigilance Bureau on January 29, 2003 under section 13 (E), 13(2) of Prevention of Corruption Act and 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of IPC against Thandal for accumulating wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income during Akali Dal-BJP rule in the state from 1997 to 2002 and also for carrying five persons with him to Vancouver (Canada) as 'Panj Piaras' in 2001 for attending Baiskahi programme after preparing forged passports.
